India, Bangladesh in cross-border shelling incident.

August 11, 2006

The Indian and Bangladeshi armies are once again fighting in the undeclared war over disputed border territories near Assam.

Indian, which often acts as a mini-superpower in the Subcontinent, hasoften engaged in pretty skirmishes with it’s eastern neighbour over the border, which was sketched out on the back of a coffee mat in London circa 1949. No-one’s entirely sure where it should be, and tensions have risen in the area in recent times since India began farming lands that territory-starved Bangladesh claims for itself.

Normally the two countries share friendly relations, and it doesn’t look like either wish to spoil this over a few bullets flying back and forth, but India has recently been attempting to fence off the porous and ill-defined divide between the nations. Bangladesh has not been best pleased, since it reckons the fence is actually about 50 feet into Bangladeshi land, and mortar shelling is growing more common.
